The B46 Committee generally meets in April and October for one to two days in various locations around the country. Its meetings consist of a half day to a full day of Project Team meetings and one three hour session of the B46 Standards Committee meeting.  The Committee works on writing Standards for new or emerging technology in the field of Surface Texture metrology, revising the current B46.1 Standard, and providing for the coordination of National and International Standards. The B46 Committee operates under procedures meeting the criteria for American National Standards.

The B46.1 standard was first published in March 1940. A Revised B46.1 standard was published in February 1947, January 1955, September 1962, August 1971, March 1978, March 1985, June 1995 and October 2002.  The current edition is 2002 which includes an addenda service.
